ABOUT ART REVOLUTION.

Art Revolution is an organization promoting art for happiness, health and education.

This Art Revolution is about bringing art into America's lives to make them smarter, healthier and ultimately happier. It's not just a foundation, a book or organization; it's a movement for you, your family and your community.

  • Schools around the globe have allowed the arts to become a low priority.
  • Arts education has been slipping for more than three decades with tight budget cuts and an ever growing list of state mandates.
  • NEARLY 4 MILLION elementary school students do not receive specific instruction in the visual arts.
  • 85% of the arts programs in public schools have been cut in 3 years in Los Angeles Unified School District (the creative capital of the world).
  • 61% of schools don’t have a full time arts specialist.
Nathan and the Art Revolution team want to change the way art education is viewed around the globe, helping families and communities make art a priority in their lives, and motivating individuals to stand up for their rights to better art education in schools. All in the name of happiness.

ABOUT NATHAN SAWAYA.

Picture
Nathan Sawaya is a world-renown artist who creates awe-inspiring works out of some of the most unlikely things. His art focuses on large-scale sculptures using only toy building blocks: LEGO® bricks to be exact.

Sawaya was the first artist to ever take LEGO into the art world. For years, Sawaya’s critically acclaimed exhibition – The Art of the Brick® – has entertained and inspired art lovers and enthusiasts. Now, with multiple exhibitions touring North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and the Middle East, Sawaya is inspiring millions around the globe. Each exhibition focuses on LEGO as an art medium. The creations, constructed from millions of little pieces, were all built from standard toy bricks. In 2011, CNN named The Art of the Brick one of the top 10 “must see exhibitions in the world.”

However, Sawaya was not always a professional artist. Once he was a lawyer, which he did not find as fun as being an artist. Now happier, healthier and likely just a little bit smarter, Sawaya travels the globe telling his story of what it took to follow his passion, pursue his dream and hopefully inspire others to integrate art in their everyday lives.

“Art is not optional. It is as necessary as breathing and eating.”
- Nathan Sawaya

Sawaya revolutionized LEGO as an art medium. His vision is to make art a national priority - in our schools and in our homes. To remind everyone that art is where ever they are and to unleash everyone’s personal creativity.

Born in Colville, Washington and raised in Veneta, Oregon, Sawaya’s childhood dreams were always fun and creative. He drew cartoons, wrote stories, perfected magic tricks and of course also played with LEGO. His days were filled with imagination.

When it came time for college, Sawaya moved to New York City and attended NYU. He attended NYU School of Law and became an attorney. But soon he realized he would rather be sitting on the floor expressing himself with LEGO bricks, than sitting in a board room negotiating contracts.

Today Sawaya has more than 4 million colored bricks in his New York and Los Angeles art studios. His work is obsessively and painstakingly crafted and is both beautiful and playful. Sawaya’s ability to transform LEGO bricks into something new, his devotion to scale and color perfection, the way he conceptualizes the action of the subject matter, enables him to elevate an ordinary toy to the status of fine art.
